Phú Quốc Airport to Sonasea: every transfer option compared

The drive from Phú Quốc Airport to Sonasea is short — about 8 kilometres, 15 minutes on the new coast road. What surprises people is how much the price can vary for the same ride. A friend pays 90,000 ₫ on Grab; the couple next to them at baggage claim pays 500,000 ₫ to a hall tout. Same car, same road.

Here’s what each option actually costs in 2026, and what we tell guests staying at Luna.

The fastest way to know: open Grab before you land

If you only read one line, read this: download Grab before your flight and open it on Wi-Fi inside the terminal. A ride from Phu Quoc airport to Sonasea is 90,000–130,000 ₫ fixed, the driver finds you in 3–5 minutes, and there’s no negotiating. Cash and card both work.

Phú Quốc International Airport (code VKG) has a clearly signed Grab pickup zone — walk out of arrivals, turn right, follow the signs ~50 metres. Don’t get in the first car a tout points you at; those are not the Grab driver you booked.

Why not the taxi rank?

Metered taxis (Mai Linh, Vinasun, Sasco — yellow or green) park at the official rank outside arrivals. The meter rate is fair: 200,000–280,000 ₫ from the airport to Sonasea/Bãi Trường including the airport surcharge. The risk isn’t the meter — it’s the airport hall touts who’ll quote a “fixed price” of 400,000–500,000 ₫ before you reach the rank. Walk past them.

Hall tout “fixed taxi”400,000–500,000 ₫15 minAvoid. Same car, triple price.

Public bus P1~30,000 ₫45–60 minRuns every 30–45 min; doesn’t stop at hotel gates

Prices vary slightly with the season and surge time. The Tết holiday and the dry-season peak (Dec–Feb) push everything up by 10–20%.

When the hotel transfer is worth it

We arrange airport pickup for guests who:

  • Land after 11pm or before 6am — Grab works but fewer drivers are around
  • Travel with small children, elderly parents, or lots of luggage
  • Want to avoid the hall touts completely (a name sign at arrivals is the easiest way)
  • Want the same trusted driver for transfers around the island during the stay

The fare is 150,000 ₫ one-way — about the same as Grab, but you get a vetted driver, a name sign at the gate, and zero negotiation. Booking is simple: send us your flight number + arrival time the day before via contact. We confirm by reply. A driver in a clean SUV will be inside arrivals with a “LUNA ORIENTAL — [your name]” sign.

For short stays or solo travellers on a budget, Grab is honestly fine. The driver will drop you at the gate of SS27 Sonasea Villas & Resort CEO and the security guard waves you through to Luna’s reception.

A note on the road itself

The road from the airport to Sonasea — Highway DT 975 along the coast — has been resurfaced and runs along Bãi Trường (Long Beach) for most of the way. It’s the prettiest 15 minutes of any airport drive in Vietnam: palm trees on the right, the sea on the left, the occasional cow. You’ll catch your first glimpse of the beach about 5 minutes in — that’s the same beach Luna is two minutes from.

If your flight lands in late afternoon, ask the driver to slow down near the Sonasea boardwalk. The sunset over the water from that stretch is reason enough to take the long way.

Arriving at Luna

When you reach SS27 Sonasea, the security gate waves through anyone with a hotel name. Luna’s reception is in the boutique cluster — Tâm or someone from the team will have a cold towel and a glass of lemongrass tea ready before you’ve finished signing in.

If you’re still planning the stay, have a look at the rooms and the find-us page for the exact location. For a transfer quote or to ask anything before flying, send us a note via contact.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Phu Quoc airport from Sonasea / Bãi Trường?

About 8 km — roughly a 15-minute drive on the new coast road. Sonasea sits at the south end of Bãi Trường, the closest hotel cluster to Phú Quốc International Airport (VKG).

How much does a taxi from Phu Quoc airport to Sonasea cost?

Metered taxi from the airport rank is around 200,000–280,000 ₫. Touts inside the arrivals hall often quote 400,000–500,000 ₫ flat — don't pay that. Grab is the simplest fix: 90,000–130,000 ₫ fixed price.

Is there a Grab at Phu Quoc airport?

Yes. Grab works at VKG. Open the app while you're still inside, walk to the dedicated Grab pickup zone (signs in English), and the driver finds you in 3–5 minutes. Cash and card both accepted.

Is there an airport bus to Sonasea?

There is a public bus (route P1) that loops around the south of the island and passes near Sonasea, but it runs roughly every 30–45 minutes and doesn't stop right at the resorts. Fine if you have all day and a small bag; otherwise Grab is faster and only slightly more expensive.

Can Luna Oriental arrange airport pickup?

Yes — around 150,000 ₫ one-way for a clean private car with a driver who knows the SS27 Sonasea gate. Send your flight details the day before via contact; we'll have the driver waiting at arrivals with your name on a sign.
