South Phu Quoc Day Tour: Bai Sao, Sunset Town and six stops

The south Phu Quoc day tour covers six distinct stops across the southern end of the island — history, food production, a working temple, and one of the best beaches in the region. It is a cultural and sightseeing route, not a water-sports day. The pace is relaxed, moving by bus with a guide who explains each location. A film camera is provided for the day, which slows things down in a good way — photographs become deliberate rather than reflexive. This is the tour that gives you context for the island rather than just its surfaces.

Itinerary

08:00 — Pickup from Luna Oriental.

Stop 1 — Sunset Town (Thị Trấn Hoàng Hôn): Built on the southwest tip of the island, Sunset Town is a boardwalk and entertainment district designed around the evening light. The tour visits during the day, which means fewer crowds but harsher light for photography. The architecture is worth seeing regardless of the hour — a mix of colonial-inspired facades, cobblestone lanes, and canal walkways.

Stop 2 — Phú Quốc Prison (Nhà Tù Phú Quốc): Known locally as Coconut Prison, this colonial-era facility was used during the Vietnam War and is now a museum. Wax figures recreate conditions inside the cells and interrogation rooms. The exhibition is confronting by design — it intends to document, not soften. Worth knowing before bringing young children.

Stop 3 — Fish sauce house (Nhà thùng Khải Hoàn): Phú Quốc fish sauce (nước mắm) is one of the island’s oldest and most important products, and the Khải Hoàn facility is one of the few still using traditional large wooden barrel fermentation. The brief tour shows the production process from salted anchovies to finished sauce, and a tasting is included. The smell is strong inside the barrel room.

Stop 4 — Bãi Sao beach (lunch + swimming): Bãi Sao is consistently rated among the finest beaches in southern Vietnam — white sand, clear water, and a relatively calm bay. The group stops here for seafood lunch at a beachside restaurant and free time for swimming. This is the highlight of the day for most visitors. Bring a towel and swimwear.

Stop 5 — Hộ Quốc Temple (Thiền viện Hộ Quốc): A large Buddhist monastery on a wooded hillside in the south. The grounds are quiet and well-kept, with sea views from the upper terraces. Modest dress is expected — shoulders and knees covered. The guide can advise on what is appropriate.

Stop 6 — Sanato sunset viewpoint: An elevated viewpoint offering views toward the cable car route and the southern archipelago. Best for late-afternoon light, which this stop usually catches given its position in the itinerary.

17:00 — Return to Luna Oriental.

Good to know

The film camera provided is analog — photographs won’t be visible until the roll is developed. This is intentional. It encourages being present at each stop rather than reviewing images continuously. The guide can advise on getting the roll developed locally after the tour.

Sunset Town looks best in the evening light — the name tells you when. This tour visits during the day for practical reasons, so manage expectations: the architecture is still interesting, but the famous golden-hour glow won’t be there.

Phú Quốc Prison is one of the more historically significant sites on the island and is worth visiting with a guide who can provide context. The wax figure displays are graphic in places.

At Hộ Quốc Temple, cover your shoulders and knees before entering. Lightweight scarves or a change of shirt in your bag will handle this. The upper terraces involve some steps — wear shoes you can walk in.

Bãi Sao beach has calm water most of the year, making it safe for most swimmers. There are no lifeguards, so supervision of young children is your responsibility.
