Ong Lang Beach Phú Quốc: where to catch the best sunset
Most first-time visitors to Phú Quốc end up on Bãi Trường, the long west-coast strip where most of the hotels are. It’s a fine beach. But if you want the sunset everyone photographs without the crowd standing in front of it, you drive a little further north. Ong Lang Beach sits in a string of small sandy bays on the northwest coast — quieter, rockier, and angled to catch the evening light in a way the busier beaches don’t.
It’s not a secret anymore, but it still feels like one on a weekday evening.
What makes Ong Lang Beach different
Where Bãi Trường is one continuous 20-kilometre stretch of sand, Ong Lang is a series of smaller coves separated by rocky headlands. The sand is soft and golden, the water shallow and clear, and the headlands break the shoreline into pockets that rarely fill up. You can walk from one cove to the next over the rocks at low tide.
The development here is lighter than on the south coast — a scatter of small eco-minded stays and beach bars tucked into the trees rather than a wall of buildings. The forest comes close to the sand in places, and the overall feeling is closer to how the island’s west coast looked a decade ago.
The trade-off is simple: fewer facilities, fewer people, more quiet. If you want a sunbed-and-cocktail beach club, stay on Bãi Trường. If you want a stretch of sand where you can hear the water, come here.
The sunset Ong Lang Beach is known for
This is the real reason to make the trip. Ong Lang Beach sits in a bay that faces slightly northwest, so the sun drops into the sea at an angle rather than straight ahead. That angle does something to the light — the water picks up warmer gold and copper tones, and the rocky points in the foreground give you something to frame the photo against.

Arrive about 45 minutes before the listed sunset time. Order a drink at one of the beach bars, find a spot on the sand or the rocks, and wait. On a clear evening it’s the best sunset on the island, and you’ll be sharing it with a handful of people instead of a hundred.
Getting to Ong Lang Beach from Bãi Trường
From Luna at SS27 Sonasea on Bãi Trường, Ong Lang is about 25–35 minutes north. You ride up through Dương Đông, then continue northwest a few kilometres until the signs and side roads for the Ong Lang bays appear. The beach is roughly 7 km northwest of Dương Đông town.
By scooter: the easiest and most flexible option. The coast road is sealed, and the last turn-offs to the individual coves are short dirt or gravel lanes — fine on two wheels, slower in a car.
By car or Grab: comfortable for a group, but Grab availability thins out the further north you go. If you’re staying for sunset, arrange the return ahead of time — our front desk can hold a driver so you’re not stuck waiting after dark in a low-signal area.
Most of the access points have a small parking area near a beach bar. Pick a cove, park, and walk down.
What to expect, and where to eat
Facilities are light. A few beachfront bars and small kitchens run along the bays — Mango Bay’s beach bar is the best known, and there are a couple of seafood spots — but this is not Bãi Trường’s restaurant strip. Bring water, reef-safe sunscreen, and some cash for a drink.
Swimming is good in the dry season — the coves are sheltered and the water is shallow and clear. In the wet months (May–October) the surf picks up on this exposed northwest coast, so check conditions before you wade in.
What you get in return is space. On a weekday outside peak season, you may have a whole cove to yourself, with the rocks, the palms, and the water doing all the work.
When to go, and the north-island loop
October to April is the dry window — calm seas, clear water, reliable sunsets. May to October brings more surf and cloudier afternoons, but a clear evening still pays off, and the beach is at its emptiest.
Ong Lang sits at the start of the northwest run, which makes it easy to combine with other north-island stops on the way up or back:
- Bãi Dài — the long undeveloped beach further northwest, another quiet stretch backing onto the national park.
- Cửa Cạn — the mangrove river mouth, good for a slow kayak before the beach.
- A morning at one of these, lunch, then Ong Lang for the late afternoon and sunset, and back south for dinner.
